Authentic - Christmas Savings

Recently I was given a book called, “Little Known Stuff About Well Known Things” - I’m guessing Randy and Susan Thomas thought a book like this would feed nicely my insatiable hunger to know more than Cliff Claven. And so the book has been added to my library, ‘Hall of Weird’ and now one day while on ‘Who Wants to Be A Millionaire’ I won’t have to use that phone a friend lifeline just to discover that Ashton Kutcher used to be a janitor making $12 an hour sweeping Cheerios off the floor of the General Mills Company or what’s so significant about Pharaoh Ramses the Second or his 160 children—That’s right, 160—I think his name was really Pharaoh Ramses Purnell. :)

Here’s an interesting thought gleaned from my new tomb of knowledge.

In 1987 American Airlines saved $40,000 a year by removing one olive from every salad served on it’s first class flights.

WOW! That’s one expensive olive! I guess what strikes me about this is not how much that one olive cost, but that AA was able to save that much and still give people exactly what they want. A good salad, good flight and the howtie-towtie upper crust of first class didn't even miss that one olive.

You and I are blessed. While most of us want more than we have, we have more than we can use. We store it in our attics, garages, and closets. We rent self storage facilities in order to store even more of it. It’s true that most everyone could have a larger salary and more stuff, but it’s equally true that most of our homes are filled with trinkets and gadgets that are nice, but not really necessary.

Don’t get me wrong...if it blinks and beeps I probably want it. And some of those trinkets have sentimental value—and that stuff I’m storing I’ll use someday, really I will—it’s not wrong to want stuff or to have stuff. I just wonder how generous a people we could be if we gave up one olive?

It’s happened on several occasions in the CAM Sunday School department. Someone in the class has a need and the class in their generosity comes together to meet that need.

In this season of ‘giving’ I wonder what would happen if we each gave up one olive. We give gifts every Christmas—I wonder if those gifts reflect true generosity or the traditions of the season.

One olive—maybe it would feed a homeless man on Christmas day. One olive, perhaps it would provide shelter for an African boy you’ll never meet. One olive, to encourage someone in your Sunday School, to enable someone in your office, to meet the needs of the world around you, to go on mission, to share Jesus with someone near you.

One olive you’ll never miss—that’s not sacrifice, that’s generosity and generosity is the spirit of Christmas. Think of it as Christmas ‘Savings’.

Interested in singing for your food? Chic-Fil-A of Owasso has invited members of CAM from FBCO to sing or play Christmas music in their store throughout the month of December. Those who sing will get something to eat for free. We need groups of people willing to sing carols, play songs, etc...this would likely be a cappella or possibly with a small boom box. Beginning January 2007 right here in theScore we’ll begin printing in this space that which concerns you enough to bring it before God. I could call this area Prayer and Praise. We could consider this our prayer requests section. And it will be those things—but I hope for it to be more. Let’s come together before God concerning those issues that concern each of us personally and corporately the most. Busy schedules, family & church events, physical needs, finances, family, friendship and business relationships, church matters, heart matters—let’s hear the need and petition with one voice the One capable of meeting that need, then let’s celebrate together the great things God does daily!

God is waiting. God is listening. In 2007 let’s spend deliberate time together in conversation with Him!
