Authentic - Measured by the Mundane

Anybody remember The Bangles!? Sing with me now…

“It’s just another manic Monday; I wish it was Sunday; ‘Cause that’s my funday; My I don’t have to runday; it’s just another manic Monday.”

I’ve said it before, but let me issue again this word of encouragement [warning] – if Monday’s for you are mostly bad just remember that 1/7th of your life will be spent on a Monday!

I’m not a Greek scholar – I’m really just a guy with a dictionary who likes to use big words J - But I am impressed with the precise manner in which the dominant language of the New Testament works. Most of the New Testament was written in Koine’ Greek. If you’ve been in church very long you’ve likely heard a preacher say something like, “in the original Greek…” or “…in the Greek language there are multiple words for ‘love’”. In the same way the Greeks had multiple words to describe the passage of time; Chronos & Kairos.

Chronos is time as it passes. Kairos is an opportune time, or a moment in time that changes all times after it.

As we consider ‘Chronos Time’ we think in terms of:

Þ Then | Now | Next

Þ Before | During | After

Þ Cause | Catalyst | Effect.

But with Kairos we consider the power of a moment. That one defining moment by which all other moments will some day be judged. We celebrate Kairos moments. In Latin we would say, “Carpe Diem”. In English, “Seize the Day”! If Chronos is the football game, Kairos is the winning touchdown. As a child we look forward with great anticipation to Kairos moments – Christmas, our next birthday, getting a drivers license, that first kiss, graduation day. Growing older we look back on our Kairos moments with that melancholy mixture of fondness and regret as we consider what we accomplished, what we missed and all the work left undone.

We live in Chronos moments. We live for Kairos moments. This is why mental disorders such as Alzheimer’s and dementia are so insidious. Because of aging or faulty wiring in our mind we lose connection with the Kairos moments we think define our lives.

In reality our lives are so much more than a mass of momentary memories or a list of goals to be accomplished. Before David could face the giant he had to become proficient with a sling and a stone while tending sheep. Before David the King, was David the Shepherd. There was a Kairos moment of life change in Paul’s life. That moment on the road to Damascus where the murderous Saul was forever transformed into the Apostle Paul – Galatians 1:23 – 24 testifies, “And they were hearing only, ‘He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith he once tried to destroy. And they glorified God in me.’” That was Paul’s moment of life change – but God used every prior event in the life of Paul both to lead him down that road and to equip him for the great work that lay ahead.

So what is God doing in you? Maybe you’re approaching a Kairos moment, maybe one just passed. How will He judge you? Will He judge based on your Chronos or Kairos? Would you rather be measured by mundane manic Mondays or by mountain top memories of momentary victories? What if we spend so much time focused on finding Kairos that we miss the life God has for us in Chronos?

Here’s what I mean…I heard a football player once tell his coach, “I don’t care if we win or lose, I just want to get mine.” What he meant was that the team win wasn’t important to him as long as his stats looked good. Guess what…that player never ‘got his’ – because the coach never let him play. This is how some of us approach our walk with Christ. It’s as though we think that if there is no big event, no seemingly significant task, or nothing tangible in it for me, then the daily disciplines of our faith just aren’t that important. It’s like we say to God, “I don’t care who we win or lose. Prayer, Bible Study, worship, fellowship, showing up at church – these things aren’t that important, just so long as I get mine – my ticket to heaven, my peace that passes understanding, my bills paid, my involvement in the next big event…my…my…my…” Matthew says we’ll be judged for every idle word that comes out of our mouth – that tells me God’s taking a close look at our Chronos. The Bible also says that today is the day of salvation – that tells me God is planning another Kairos even as we speak.

I wonder if you’ll be ready. I wonder if, like the football player, you’ll be benched for a bad attitude or if like David you’ll amaze and bless a nation because you prepared yourself in the mundane. Chronos is passing – kairos is coming and you will be measured by both.

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad

Authentic - The 'B' Badge of Honor?

Psalm 39:4 – 6

“Lord, make to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am. Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, and my age is as nothing before You; certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Surely every many walks about like a shadow; surely they busy themselves in vain; he heaps up riches, and does not know who will gather them.”

Psalm 39:4 – 6

“I’m late! I’m late! For a very important date! No time to say hello, goodbye, I’M LATE, I’M LATE, I’M LATE!”

You remember the tale. There sits Alice next to a tree and the White Rabbit comes charging by, hurried in speech and mannerisms, looking at his watch and harried in appearance. He must be important. He’s well dressed. He has somewhere to be. And he’s made it clear, “HE’S LATE!” So down the rabbit hole he goes.

To quote the book,

“…Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take it out of, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge. In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.”

There is a badge of honor worn by people today. We flaunt it in front of friends and coworkers. We flash it like a Monopoly Card, “Get Out of Volunteering [Serving] Free”. We parade around with it and show it to our family, when we have time for family. It is our excuse to be abrupt with people, rude to some and dismissive of others. We may not be wealthy. We may not be influential. The career we’ve chosen may not change the world. But we are BUSY – and therein we find our significance.

Like Alice charging down the rabbit-hole we fill our time with stuff to do, places to be, things to see, and like Alice we often do this, “…never once considering how in the word we are to get out again.” It is the challenge of our modern world. There are so many good things to do, so many different ways to do them and only so many hours in the day. The challenge for today is not, ‘WHAT can I do?’, but, ‘WHERE do I start!?’ And so as fully devoted followers of Christ how do I choose what’s best for me, my family, our friends and the Kingdom of God?

Here’s the deal – being BUSY is not the problem. Life Happens. We’re going to be busy. The true test is whether or not we’re busy doing the things God has planned for us. Being busy doing SOMEthing is not the same as being busy doing the RIGHT thing.

This Sunday Pastor will teach from John 11. It’s the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. I’m struck by the fact that Jesus was always busy. Yet his busyness was always the work of God. From eating a simple meal with 5000 of his closet friends to teaching some great truth beside the Sea of Galilee, Jesus was busy but not frantic. He had the most significant of tasks to accomplish, yet was never rushed.

Here’s what Jesus knew that we need to catch:

Þ Busy does not equal IMPORTANT.

Þ Busy does not equal RIGHT.

Þ Busy does not equal PRODUCTIVE.

Þ Busy does not equal LIFE.

Remember the story of Lazarus. Mary and Martha sent people to Jesus to tell Him of Lazarus’ sickness, yet Jesus didn’t come heal Lazarus. I think Jesus’ response to the messengers is interesting. He doesn’t tell Mary and Martha He’s too busy to come – it’s likely He was – instead He says, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

When was the last time you were asked to do something and you so clearly knew God’s plan for your day that you could answer in such a way as this? “I’m sorry. I can’t do that right now. God’s got a plan that involves His glory – and if I do that right now I would really just be in the way.”

I’m sure Mary and Martha were hacked – or at least disappointed – but Jesus kept His word and in His time and His way…really in a way that no one ever imagined He ‘healed’ Lazarus by raising him from the dead.

What would your life be like if you weren’t so busy doing ‘stuff’, but instead you were busy doing those things that were clearly in God’s plan for your day? Stop parading your busyness around as though being busy means something. Start listening to the heart of God and let’s be busy doing that which brings Him glory. You’ll discover your ‘to do’ list done, your needs met, your relationships healthy and interruptions – well, just another opportunity from God. We’ve already jumped down the rabbit-hole. While we’re here let’s be busy for the glory of God.

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad

Authentic - Discretion vs. Deception

Proverbs 4:24

“Put away from you a deceitful mouth and put perverse lips far from you.”

Proverbs 4:24

Proverbs 2:11 – 12

“Discretion will preserve you, understanding will keep you. To deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things.”

Proverbs 2:11 – 12

It is the deepest of philosophical questions. It has vexed men for ages. From the heights of the Himalaya Mountains to the depths of the ocean floor men have searched for the answer, for the meaning behind the question. Those who have braved an answer are met with scorn and those who would not answer met with ridicule. Who can know such deep and enigmatic things as this? Will anyone ever uncover the appropriate response? Of what great philosophical question do I speak?

“Do these pants make my rear look big?”

The best among us would say, “Honey, you make those pants look great!” The cold would say, “Yes.” And the cruel would say, “As compared to what!?” Yet still the question is asked and men trip over their tongues every time they try to answer.

Londa and I now have three kids. With the arrival of Ethan, Jaiden began asking another kind of uncomfortable question that makes Dads squirm. “Daddy, where do little babies come from?”

The Bible is clear about God’s view of TRUTH. In His view there is no room for deception. Anything that is not honest is not holy. Anything that is not truthful is not righteous. Therefore if we are to be fully devoted followers of Christ we must commit ourselves to knowing, living and speaking the truth with no mixture error or deception. While the questions I mentioned above are lighthearted they are examples of situations that test our honesty daily.

Truthfulness is important because it is from an honest and open exchange of ideas and expectations that we build the foundation of TRUST necessary for every healthy relationship; be it worker to boss, friend to friend, husband to wife or parent to child and any other combination you can imagine.

I would guess that most of us don’t struggle with big lies – you know, the kind of lies that get you fired, sent to prison or worse. But daily we are faced with questions that impact our integrity and let the people around you know whether or not you can be trusted. If you lie about the little things, then how long till you lie about something ‘important’?

Both of the lighthearted questions above can be answered honestly and in a way that builds up rather than tears down. The Bible calls this ‘discretion’. Discretion is an art we have lost today. Ask anyone. There is an assumption that everyone lies. Instead of truth we spin, we shape, we define and redefine the meaning of our words till we forget what its like to say what we mean and mean what we say. Our politicians are especially good at this. ‘Is’ absolute truth real? Well I guess that all depends on what the definition of ‘is’ is. --- right!?

Here’s how you can tell the difference between discretion and deception in your own heart. Deception comes easy and always seems like a good idea at the time. It’s why we’re so comfortable telling those little white lies. We justify deception because we think it makes us look good. Besides, the whole truth could hurt the one to whom we lie. And that’s the heart of the matter. Deception tears down others. We tell our boss what he wants to hear rather than what he needs to hear. We tell our spouse nothing is wrong when there’s an elephant standing squarely in the middle of the room. We tell or children too much or too little and so they look for answers elsewhere.

Discretion is not easy. Discretion carefully chooses to share honest information wisely and in a way that builds trust even if what is said is unpleasant. It doesn’t mean I blurt out carelessly whatever comes to mind or every detail I know. But rather I say what’s necessary for edification and to communicate the truth of the matter. It’s different from spin – spin speaks what’s best for me. While discretion may not speak everything it knows discretion will always speak what’s accurate, even if the truth is harmful to me.

Discretion is the way God reveals truth. He’s not unloaded on us everything He knows about our life and our future, yet He has been completely honest and open with us. He has said, “Trust me, obey my Word and discover My favor.” In the midst of the storms of my life Jesus looks at me and says, “Oh ye of little faith,” then steps to the front of the boat commanding the winds and the waves saying, “Peace, be still.” And I come to know and experience a deeper truth about who He is and His love for me. Had I known about the storm I probably wouldn’t have gotten in the boat in the first place. That’s discretion.

Jaiden is 4 years old. When she asks about where babies come from she’s not looking for Biology 101. Discretion answers her honestly while not providing more information than a 4 year old would either comprehend or believe.

Discretion is also willing to say, “I don’t know.” Guys, I don’t know if we’ll ever find the right answer to the question about pants and behinds – I prefer the answer, “You make those pants look good.” Perhaps discretion will teach women not to ask and teach men how to pray more! J

This week stop telling little white lies. Let truth managed by discretion, govern how you speak, act and live. In doing so, you will grow in wisdom and in stature and in favor with both God and man.

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad
