Authentic - Full Devotion

I’ve been thinking about our vision statement:

“Leading people to become fully devoted followers of Christ.”

I think that’s a good vision statement. It’s an admirable goal. It’s something not reserved for a select group of people, but something for everyone. It implies the 5 purposes of our church: Worship, Discipleship, Ministry, Fellowship and Evangelism. And it’s focused on the two things God cares about most: Christ & People. Most importantly it’s not a clever marketing phrase designed to build an organization but a summation of Scriptural concepts focused on building people.

I’ve wondered though…what does a fully devoted follower of Christ look like? Does full devotion mean perfect attendance at every activity the church has to offer? Does it mean I never make a mistake? Am I so heavenly minded I’m no earthly good? I don’t think that’s it at all.

When I think of full devotion what comes to mind is healthy living. There’s nothing complicated about being healthy physically. It’s just hard. To be healthy physically requires three things:

Healthy Appetite (eat right) + Healthy Activity (exercise) + Healthy Choices = Healthy Living

The same is true spiritually.

Healthy Appetite (A hunger for prayer and Bible Study) + Healthy Activity (this is church involvement) + Healthy Choices = FULL DEVOTION.

And here’s the thing about spiritual health (A.K.A Full Devotion). We gain a healthy appetite and discover how to make healthy choices by participating in Healthy Activity – that’s church involvement. Now, there’s a lot going on at FBCO every week. This weekend alone we’ll have a Marriage and Parenting Conference, Easter Egg Hunt, our regular Sunday AM Worship services and Sunday School, the Easter blitz and a Singles Ministry Event Sunday night. There’s no lack of activity or opportunity here! When I say Healthy Activity is church involvement and that it’s one thing that leads to full devotion am I suggesting that you’re not fully devoted if you’re not at every one of these events? Certainly not.

But I will suggest this. Healthy Activity (A.K.A. Church Involvement) is reflected in three simple things:

  1. Sunday School – that’s a small group connection – this is Bible Study, relationships, accountability & friendship
  2. Worship Services – that’s a large group connection – this is worship, Bible Study & sharing the gospel
  3. Special Interest (iConnect) – that’s an individual, special connection. This is volunteering in CAM, FAITH or in our age level ministries or taking a class that will deepen you in an area of concern specific to you like Women’s Bible Studies, Financial Peace or PLACE.

That’s what I mean when I say healthy activity is church involvement, to participate in Sunday School and Worship and to be involved in some area of special interest as a volunteer, using the opportunities the church provides to deepen your individual walk with Christ and to lead others to do the same.

It’s interesting. I’ve been a church member all my life and I’ve seen it a thousand times. When someone opts out of one of these three things it’s not long before they opt out of church all together. There’s always an excuse and they will always say they are continuing in their own personal disciplines such as prayer and Bible Study, but eventually their appetite for these things subsides and their ability to make healthy choices erodes as they further separate themselves from the church, the body of Christ. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not talking about someone God moves to another church…sometimes God moves the troops around. I’m talking about someone who, for whatever reason, opts out of fellowship with other Believers all together.

So I wonder. How you’re doing on your journey toward full devotion? Do you have a healthy appetite for prayer and the study of God’s Word? Are you involved in healthy activity with other Believers? Do you attend Sunday School, Worship Services and are you connected in some area of special interest? Are you making healthy choices, choices based on Scripture rather than the whims of the moment? Take some time to evaluate where you are on this road to full devotion, and then ask God to give you the courage and the strength to take your next step of faith. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad

Authentic - Devo

Welcome to the short and sweet Spring Break edition of theScore – be sure to notice the order of service below. For the instrumentalists it gives style suggestions, for the vocalist it reminds us that we will be singing GOD IS WORKING this Sunday AM featuring Merrilee Purnell as our soloist! Please notice that audio copies of some of the songs below are either on the CD’s you’ve already received or available at http://feeds.feedburner.com/camcast1 | The spin of ‘Come Just As You Are’ has the right chordage, but not the right style…it’s the only copy I have and will at least get the basic melody and harmony in our ears!

READ

“But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Jeremiah 17:7 – 8

REFLECT

We place our confidence in so many schemes. We’ve all been sucked in at one time or another by the deal that’s too good to be true. Get rich quick! Get skinny now! Take this pill and be smarter. Change your job and be more satisfied. What do you place your confidence in? The Bible tells us that God can be trusted. He has never failed to fulfill any one of His promises. This has been my experience with Him. Do you struggle with conflict? Worry? Fear of failure? TRUST God and know what it means to live in His blessing and favor.

RESPOND

What are you placing your confidence in? Time for a heart check. What do you rely on for your happiness or fulfillment besides the approval of God? Ask God to show you areas in your life where you need to trust Him more. Ask God to give you the faith needed to trust you more. It’s not about turning over a new leaf. It’s not about will power. It’s about trust and surrender.

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad

Authentic — Listen

“A woman's family is held together by her wisdom, but it can be destroyed by her foolishness. By living right, you show that you respect the LORD; by being deceitful, you show that you despise him. Proud fools are punished for their stupid talk, but sensible talk can save your life. Without the help of an ox there can be no crop, but with a strong ox a big crop is possible. An honest witness tells the truth; a dishonest witness tells nothing but lies. Make fun of wisdom, and you will never find it. But if you have understanding, knowledge comes easily. Stay away from fools, or you won't learn a thing. Wise people have enough sense to find their way, but stupid fools get lost. Fools don't care if they are wrong, but God is pleased when people do right. No one else can really know how sad or happy you are. The tent of a good person stands longer than the house of someone evil. You may think you are on the right road and still end up dead. Sorrow may hide behind laughter, and happiness may end in sorrow. You harvest what you plant, whether good or bad. Don't be stupid and believe all you hear; be smart and know where you are headed. Only a stupid fool is never cautious--so be extra careful and stay out of trouble. Fools have quick tempers, and no one likes you if you can't be trusted. Stupidity leads to foolishness; be smart and learn. The wicked will come crawling to those who obey God. You have no friends if you are poor, but you have lots of friends if you are rich. It's wrong to hate others, but God blesses everyone who is kind to the poor. It's a mistake to make evil plans, but you will have loyal friends if you want to do right. Hard work is worthwhile, but empty talk will make you poor. Wisdom can make you rich, but foolishness leads to more foolishness. An honest witness can save your life, but liars can't be trusted. If you respect the LORD, you and your children have a strong fortress and a life-giving fountain that keeps you safe from deadly traps. Rulers of powerful nations are held in honor; rulers of weak nations are nothing at all. It's smart to be patient, but it's stupid to lose your temper. It's healthy to be content, but envy can eat you up. If you mistreat the poor, you insult your Creator; if you are kind to them, you show him respect. In times of trouble the wicked are destroyed, but even at death the innocent have faith. Wisdom is found in the minds of people with good sense, but fools don't know it. Doing right brings honor to a nation, but sin brings disgrace. Kings reward servants who act wisely, but they punish those who act foolishly.”

Proverbs 14:1 – 35 (CEV)

Today is March 14th so today I read Proverbs 14. I wonder…for how many of us is the passage above the most Scripture we’ve read on our own all week? There’s no guilt being heaped on you here…just a curiosity that comes from wondering how you prepare yourself to lead worship each week. So I’m asking… what do you do to prepare yourself to lead worship each week? I would love to hear from you all…email me, chad@fbcowasso.org and tell me what God’s doing in your life! Perhaps tomorrow we will pick up our Bibles and together read from Proverbs 15. Each time we read God’s Word we open ourselves to God’s will and God’s way.

What are you concerns? What decisions do you face today? What worries you? God has given you the answers to all these things in His Word. Take time to read it today.

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad

Authentic - Here I Am

I’m sure you’ve not missed it…the past several months we’ve been focused on the vision of FBCO – Leading People to Become Fully Devoted Followers of Christ – that’s the big idea and the defining value of who we are as a church. It’s the heart behind what we do. Along with this we’ve talked about the nuts and bolts of the finances of our church – Biblical principles of stewardship, debt free living, tithing, generosity and sacrifice, a $5 million dollar mortgage and how God will provide for us individually and as a church in the future.

Let me take a moment to say THANKS – to everyone who helped communicate the truths of God’s Word during this time of Value the Vision and to everyone who has faithfully given financially to the church through the tithe and over and above the tithe. It’s always hard to talk about money at church. There are several reasons for this:

1. Money invokes a knee jerk reaction so that even when right things are being said about it people often hear something else.

2. There are shining examples of money being misrepresented or mishandled by leaders in all kinds of organizations, including the church. I’m honored to be a part of a church where this has not been the case and pray that God will continue to protect the integrity of how we handle these matters, both as a staff and as members, volunteers and leaders within the church.

3. As individuals, regardless of how much money we have it’s something we can always use more of and someone can always be found who has more than we do, whether they deserve it or not.

4. Money is a great thermometer that very publicly demonstrates where my heart is. In my Sunday School class someone said, “If I ask to see what’s in your wallet it’s an invasion of privacy. But if you take it out of your wallet, spend it on clothes, house or a car it becomes a status symbol to be shown to the whole world.” Interesting thought isn’t it?

For these reasons and others money is hard to talk about in church. And so, let me commend you. You have led well as we’ve discussed a topic that, at best, is difficult to approach. More than that, 291 families have offered up to God part of their income to make this church home a better place for everyone. 60 families have committed to begin tithing. And most important of all they have done this out of simple obedience to God and love for Him. And that’s what it’s really about. You’ve heard Pastor say, and it’s no cliché, that God doesn’t need your money – but we need to learn to give. That’s part of full devotion and in this you have led well. Thank you for leading well and obeying God.

In our discussions about all this we’ve attempted to redefine sacrifice – though I don’t think the definition has really settled in our hearts. The Biblical examples of sacrifice have been misunderstood and misrepresented. Here is the most accurate definition of sacrifice I know:

Sacrifice: Giving more than you think you can afford and trusting God to provide.

In our culture we associate sacrifice with loss – and some times it is. But from a Biblical point of view that’s not entirely accurate. Sacrifice is giving more than you think you can afford and trusting God to provide. It’s the second part of the definition that’s important. When you give more than you can afford, obviously you’re losing something…but if you trust that God will provide isn’t that really a gain? He may not provide the way we expect. But it’s been my experience that God always takes care of His children.

I think about Abraham and Isaac. God told Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. Abraham responds, “Here I am.” get’s up the next morning and leads his son to the mountain where Abraham will strike him dead for the sake of simple obedience to God. Along the way Isaac says, “Dad, I’ve got a question.” Abraham responds, “Here I am.” Isaac says, “Where’s the sacrifice.” Abraham says, “God will provide.” You know the story. Abraham ties his son to the altar where he first intends to cut his throat, and then set him on fire. Just before the blow is stuck an angel of the Lord calls to Abraham and again Abraham responds, “Here I am.” The angel tells Abraham not to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham has past the test. He’s demonstrated that he loves God more than anything else in his life. God tells Abraham that because of his obedience he will be abundantly blessed. His children will be more numerous than the sands of the sea and in him all the nations of the world will be blessed. Abraham looks up, sees a ram with his horns stuck in some thickets. He takes the ram and offers the sacrifice. Did you catch it?!

Abraham was willing to give more than he thought he could ever afford and trusted God to provide. Abraham made the sacrificebut he didn’t lose a thing! That’s Biblical sacrifice. Offering a sacrifice will change your life…perhaps through loss, but always through the provision of God. Perhaps God is asking you to sacrifice something that causes you to sin. He certainly won’t give that back. But I can tell you from personal experience, the sacrifices I have made have never ultimately resulted in loss, rather I have gained more than I can even adequately describe. I am by no means rich with money, but I have known the blessing and provision of God in every area of my life. You can do the same.

Sacrifice is scary, really. And it’s never easy. When God called, Abraham simply said, “Here I am.” He said it when God told him to kill his son. He said it when God told him to NOT to kill his son. He followed God in simple obedience. He offered his sacrifice and he didn’t lose a thing – actually he became the father of our faith and through him salvation would come.

I wonder how you will respond when God calls your name. Will you say, “Here I am”? Will you get up and go and give up that which you love the most? It may be scary…it will be more than you think you can afford, but you can you trust God to provide and when He does, you and everyone around you will be blessed. This involves money…but it’s not about money. This is about your life. Will you live it for God? As for me and my house…”Here I am.”

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad

BTW…to see word for word what the Bible says about Abraham and Isaac read Genesis 22
