Authentic - Christmas Gifts

I love Christmas. We try to make every week in the month of December something special at FBCO. This coming Sunday we'll finish the marathon that is our run up to Christmas with a Candle Light Christmas Eve Service. Here's a snapshot of what December has looked like for us:
  • 10 months of preparation
  • 6 months of practice
  • 2 weeks of construction
  • 4 days to setup
  • 6 nights presenting an original play, "As Time Goes By"
  • Over 1200 dinners served @ the dinner theater
  • 1 night of amazing singing and story telling with all the musicians of the church, "Christmas | Past...Present..Eternal"
  • 4 people publicly professing faith in Christ
  • 17 people baptized
  • Scores of people expressing an interest in knowing more about being a fully devoted follower of Christ
  • 2 hours to tear it all down and be ready for Sunday School the next morning!
  • And we've not made it to Christmas Eve yet!
It's definitely a marathon. But it's a marathon everyone is inspired to run. We've now reached the sprint to the end. Everyone is focused on cleaning up last minute details, mostly personal in nature, that lead to that moment when the wrapping paper will be shredded, surprises revealed, and holiday wishes adequately exchanged.

Frantic - sometimes that's how December feels. All these things are great things. Every gift I give and receive a reminder of someone's care for me or my care for them. Reminders that go by so fast. Only days from now we'll be considering New Year's Resolutions, how to celebrate Easter and dreading doing our taxes. December's dizzying speed replaced by January's brand new list of things to do.

While the content of our December activities today is nothing like the first Christmas the speed at which it passes is likely the same. I wonder how far into the pregnancy Mary was when Caesar's decree made it to Nazareth. I wonder if after that night the shepherds sat on the hillside looking up at the stars anxiously awaiting another announcement. I wonder if the owner of the manger let them stay out of generosity or greed. Did Joseph have to pay taxes on two people or three?

On the morning of December 25th we will tear into the gifts we've so carefully wrapped, play with our new toys, sit down to dinner and by the 26th start thinking about heading back to work and what the new year holds. Mary and Joseph faced these same concerns, yet the gift wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger was so much more than an iPod, flat screen TV or new pair of shoes.

His birth would would bring death for every male child under 2. His life would bring truth to a world devoid of understanding. His Word would bring freedom to the slave. His legacy would change history, eternity...the world. And it all happened one frantic night.

Whatever gifts you give or receive this Christmas follow in the footsteps of the mother of Jesus. Don't let these moments pass unnoticed. Cherish every one. And on December 26th look ahead to 2007 - with Christ in mind.

"But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart." Luke 2:19

Authentic - Christmas Cards

Let’s start by saying THANK YOU and GREAT JOB to the cast & crew of, “As Time Goes By”! I know some of you have seen the program. I know some will see it this weekend. Whatever the case, we’ve got a hit on our hands! Not only are the people of our church enjoying a great night out together and a great show, they are, in 3 Acts hearing 3 times the gospel. So far we’ve had 3 people say they would like to establish a relationship with Christ and at least 20 more say they want to know more about our church. FANTASTIC! Thanks to everyone involved. You’re time, talent and servant’s heart has benefits in eternity!

This Sunday night will be something special. Again we will share the gospel through music. We will entangle our family traditions and songs of the season with stories of faith in a way that will remind people of the real reason for the season. If you haven’t invited someone to come yet, you’re behind! This night will be a great time to share the gospel with friends and family in a way that is entertaining and enjoyable. Saturday’s rehearsal was great! Thanks to everyone who participated and to the Choir Officers; Wendi, Cindy & Lindy for getting all that great food together! You’re time, talent and servant’s heart also has benefits in eternity!

Have you received a thousand Christmas cards yet? ‘Tis the season. Sentimental to sappy, musical to mundane, serious to silly, poetic to pathetic Christmas cards are being sent by the millions all across our country. It seems that during this holiday season people fall into several categories when it comes to Christmas cards.

1. The “I don’t send Christmas cards” group. – this is me and all the other humbugs out there who are either too lazy or too concerned their sentiment will be drowned out by all the snow flakes and shining stars arriving in the mail today.

2. The “I send Christmas cards quickly and early” group. – These are the people who strut around the week after Thanksgiving because their cards are already addressed and in the mail. Never mind the fact that they don’t have any idea what the card looked like or to whom it was sent. The task is complete! That’s one more thing to be done I can check off my Christmas list. Ok…perhaps this group is more sincere than the credit I give them here…they still make us humbugs in Group 1 look bad.

3. The “I wait till the last minute” group. – These people are well intentioned, but highly involved in every Christmas tradition imaginable. They’ll be involved in every Christmas program at church and their kid’s schools. They’ll bake a thousand Christmas cookies. If they ripped open their shirt you would find a capital ‘C’ emblazoned across their chest like the ‘S’ of Superman marking them as harbingers of Christmas Tradition. They make plans for the entire extended family to be at their house on Christmas Eve, do all the shopping, wrap all the gifts and come skidding into Christmas Day after having sent the last of the Christmas Cards the day before Christmas Eve praying they arrive on time.

4. And finally, the, “I can’t just send a Christmas Card I have to write a twelve page 2006 year in review letter about the life my entire family including what’s going on with my dog, Spot, and my fish, Lucky” group. This group can be simultaneously charming and annoying. For them it’s not enough to pick out the perfect holiday sentiment and send it to a friend as a gentle reminder they are thinking of you this Christmas. They must inform you of the goings-on of their family life. Truthfully, this is charming and the cards I like the most. I like them because they’re fun to make fun of! J Ok…that’s not all. I like them because with the card the say, “I’m thinking of you this Christmas.” But with their letter I am reminded of our good times together and ways I can pray for them. I get caught up in the lives of friends I may never see throughout the year, but about whom I care deeply. This group has taken twice the time. They picked the card and then added their own special touch, one that allows old friends to reconnect and new friends to discover more than they likely would otherwise. While I enjoy making fun of these cards they are the cards I remember the most and the ones I look most forward to receiving.

Group 4 – that’s the kind of card God has sent you this Christmas. With a child wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger He says, “I’m thinking of you.” With 66 books He’s chronicled the happenings in the life of His family. The further you read in His letter to you the more you discover this letter is about you, for He has adopted you into His family. The child in a manger, the elder son, sacrificed for the sake of the adopted sons and daughters. The story He writes this Christmas is your story. With thoughtfulness and loving-kindness He inscribed those words onto the palms of His firstborn Son as a love letter to you this Christmas. I wonder…Will His letter to you be lost amidst all the other cards you receive? Will you make fun of it? Will you even read it? Be careful. The word you ignore, the word you set aside, the word you take for granted – this is the word that became flesh and dwelt among us. This is the elder son, the child wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. This is God’s Christmas card to you.

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad

Beginning January 2007 right here in theScore we’ll begin printing in this space that which concerns you enough to bring it before God. I could call this area Prayer and Praise. We could consider this our prayer requests section. And it will be those things—but I hope for it to be more. Busy schedules, family & church events, physical needs, finances, family, friendship and business relationships, church matters, heart matters—let’s hear the need and petition with one voice the One capable of meeting that need, then let’s celebrate together the great things God does daily!

God is waiting. God is listening. In 2007 let’s spend deliberate time together in conversation with Him!

Authentic - Christmas Stockings

In my family my mom is the ‘Maker of Christmas Traditions’. She’s the one humming the carols, doing the shopping, baking the goodies, coordinating schedules, working out menus, and lighting the lights. Whatever Mrs. Claus may think about her status as Queen of Christmas she can’t hold a candy cane to my mom.

Every Christmas my brother and I would get up early in the morning, like 4:30am, sneak into the living room and discover that the already over stacked pile of packages had somehow grown ever taller over night. In awe we would stand before the Christmas tree, for a moment stunned by the brilliance of the lights and the shear volume of wrapped boxes that spilled out from under the tree deep into the heart of the living room. As the shock wore off we would dive screaming into the packages, waking the rest of the house and beginning what was sure to be a morning of ripped wrapping paper, missing batteries, new toys and noisy games.

My dad comes into the room singing, “Gloom, despair and agony on me…” But not my mom. Bleary eyed she watched as her sons tore into the packages she so thoughtfully picked, purchased and prepared for just this moment. Then, just when we thought we were through, she would hand us one more gift—our stocking. Inside we would find smaller gifts. Batteries for the Game Boy, candy for later, tapes from the latest artist...gifts smaller in size and price, but just as lovingly chosen.

It’s interesting to watch my mom at Christmas. She takes stock of everything. She notices our needs, desires and whims and every Christmas dives deep in debt just to take care of her boys. Now she lavishes that same care onto her grandchildren. The detail she goes to is amazing...down to the last chocolate turtle in the last stocking to be dumped on the living room floor, there’s no question. Christmas with my mom is extravagant—and she works hard to make it so. And I don’t want it any other way.

The love of your Heavenly Father is extravagant. Daily He watches you. He notices your need. He knows your desires and even your whims. He has taken stock of me and you and lavished us with the most extravagant of gifts and just when you think He can’t possibly give anymore He hands you a stocking. The gift inside is not earth shattering. It’s not something as grandiose as a baby, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. But it is no less significant. Perhaps inside you find a kind word spoken at right moment or the help you need to finish the task. Maybe you open your stocking and discover something sweet you’ll save for later. Whatever you find, rest assured, with that one simple gift you will be reminded that this Christmas, God is thinking of you.

Maybe someday I’ll inherit the title, Maker of Christmas Traditions, in my family—I’m sure I won’t live up to my mom. Regardless, I can’t wait to open my stocking...I wonder what’s in yours.

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad

Authentic - Christmas Savings

Recently I was given a book called, “Little Known Stuff About Well Known Things” - I’m guessing Randy and Susan Thomas thought a book like this would feed nicely my insatiable hunger to know more than Cliff Claven. And so the book has been added to my library, ‘Hall of Weird’ and now one day while on ‘Who Wants to Be A Millionaire’ I won’t have to use that phone a friend lifeline just to discover that Ashton Kutcher used to be a janitor making $12 an hour sweeping Cheerios off the floor of the General Mills Company or what’s so significant about Pharaoh Ramses the Second or his 160 children—That’s right, 160—I think his name was really Pharaoh Ramses Purnell. :)

BTW…Randy and Susan, thanks for the book!

Here’s an interesting thought gleaned from my new tomb of knowledge.

In 1987 American Airlines saved $40,000 a year by removing one olive from every salad served on it’s first class flights.

WOW! That’s one expensive olive! I guess what strikes me about this is not how much that one olive cost, but that AA was able to save that much and still give people exactly what they want. A good salad, good flight and the howtie-towtie upper crust of first class didn't even miss that one olive.

You and I are blessed. While most of us want more than we have, we have more than we can use. We store it in our attics, garages, and closets. We rent self storage facilities in order to store even more of it. It’s true that most everyone could have a larger salary and more stuff, but it’s equally true that most of our homes are filled with trinkets and gadgets that are nice, but not really necessary.

Don’t get me wrong...if it blinks and beeps I probably want it. And some of those trinkets have sentimental value—and that stuff I’m storing I’ll use someday, really I will—it’s not wrong to want stuff or to have stuff. I just wonder how generous a people we could be if we gave up one olive?

It’s happened on several occasions in the CAM Sunday School department. Someone in the class has a need and the class in their generosity comes together to meet that need.

In this season of ‘giving’ I wonder what would happen if we each gave up one olive. We give gifts every Christmas—I wonder if those gifts reflect true generosity or the traditions of the season.

One olive—maybe it would feed a homeless man on Christmas day. One olive, perhaps it would provide shelter for an African boy you’ll never meet. One olive, to encourage someone in your Sunday School, to enable someone in your office, to meet the needs of the world around you, to go on mission, to share Jesus with someone near you.

One olive you’ll never miss—that’s not sacrifice, that’s generosity and generosity is the spirit of Christmas. Think of it as Christmas ‘Savings’.

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad

Authentic - Good Intentions

Thanks to Jim Brown and all the wonderful folks who stepped up at the last moment to lead last week’s rehearsals. I was suffering from Ebola I most definitely caught from a flu shot! I appreciate your thoughts and prayers. I’m all better now.

In the last edition of theScore I asked this question:

What’s the value of good intentions?

It’s a point I’ve pondered for a period. Perhaps the prose of this page will someday provide a practically pragmatic point on which we will pause and peruse together to discover that like the preponderance of “P’s” in this paragraph, good intentions allow us primarily to pretend that we are pursuing perfection when in reality good intentions are only a prelude that portent the important and position people to fulfill the purpose for which God has prepared them.

If you can find your way past all those “P’s” you might just discover the value of good intentions.

Did you catch that? The Bible says in James 4:17, “Therefore, to him who knows to do good, but does not do it, to him it is sin.” In this verse, as in the prominently ‘P’ packed paragraph above, we find the truth about good intentions.

I believe the world is going to hell with good intentions. I believe families are falling a part because of good intentions. I believe finances are failing because of good intentions. I believe people will enter the doors of our church and leave again without ever being ministered to because of good intentions.

Good intentions are valuable. They make us feel good about ourselves. But that’s not what makes them valuable. The only value of good intentions is this: they put us on the right track—they portent the important, they signal the significant, they point us in the direction we should go, but that’s the end of their value. Too often we treat good intentions like the fat man who stumbled on a starving man. The fat man, while eating a smoked turkey leg, sees the starving man in the distance and quickly writes down his recipe for smoked turkey. When the starving man asks for a bite the fat man says, “I’ve done something even better! I’ve written down my world renowned recipe for smoked turkey. Here it is on this note card. Go now and be full!”

What are your good intentions? Why haven’t you done anything about them yet? “I meant to...I was going to...I should have...would have...could have…” How’s the old saying go? “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

This week notice your good intentions. God’s given them to you for a reason. They point you to something important that needs to be accomplished. They are your good intentions—what will you do with them?

Love y’all, God Bless,

Chad

CAM Standard of Excellence

I Corinthians 11:1 says, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.”

This verse is an expression of the mission of the Christian Arts Ministry. Our purpose in every service is to communicate with people in order to connect them with God. We can not effectively accomplish this goal without a certain level of spiritual maturity and artistic professionalism. Out of our mission we’ve identified 9 standards of excellence that define the heart, mind, and ministry of the Christ Arts Ministry Team. This is only one!

Purity

Matthew 5:8 says, “Pure hearts see God.”

We believe that when we stand before the congregation we must be aware of the fact that people are looking to us to find their way to God. Each week we will prepare as a group, but we must also prepare as individuals. Check your heart daily. See if there is any unconfessed sin or any broken relationships you need to bring before God before you stand to lead. None of us are perfect. But as we lead let’s make certain we are trusting in God’s strength and not our own.
