Go Deeper - Faith that Moves Mountains

All right, I’ll confess. Don’t get too excited, I’m not confessing too much, just that I fully recognize that very often I’m rather odd. I would prefer to be known as charmingly eccentric, but it’s really hard to tell the difference between charmingly eccentric, weird and just plain freaky – so I’ll understand if you get these confused. So why confess now? Basically because the first part of what I’ll share with you here today is going to sound…well…charmingly eccentric. J

What’s nagging at me today is Matthew 17:20. Jesus is talking with the 12 Disciples. It’s another discussion about faith. He says, “…if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”

I’m sure most of us are familiar with this verse. I’m also certain there are few of us who take this verse seriously. I’ve never seen someone command a mountain to move and it actually happen. Wait a minute…I think I saw Superman do that in a movie a couple of weeks ago, but that’s just a movie, right!? Surely I’m not suggesting that Jesus is saying that if we only had faith the size of a mustard seed that we could literally move mountains! Or maybe I am!?

Warning…this is the eccentric part…

I read this verse several weeks ago right before going to bed. Actually I read and reread the entire chapter so I could get it in context and I couldn’t find anything to indicate that Jesus was speaking figuratively or in a parable. I didn’t see any line that said, “Hey guys…this is just an illustration…” So I went to bed thinking about this verse and how incredible it is that God must have saved me in spite of the size of my faith.

What happened next is far from spiritual. Jaiden got sick. The kind of sick that means she ends up in our bedroom and gets us up every 45 minutes or so. We had just helped her through a bout of sickness at 2:37 that morning, lights had been turned out, everyone had gone back to bed. And there I lay, wide awake, really hot, wishing the fan were turned on, just wanting to get some sleep. And this verse pops in to my head again along with another thought, the kind of thought that has its source in exhaustion and dreamy wishful thinking. “Surely if faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain then the little faith I have that’s strong enough to save me should be strong enough to simply ‘wish’ a ceiling fan to come on without me having to get out of bed again!” Lazy? Maybe…Ridiculous? Probably.

I don’t know what’s more odd. That I would expect that by faith alone I could turn on a ceiling fan or that I thought faith worked like that and that I chose to use it to try to turn on a ceiling fan rather than asking God to heal my sick daughter. Like I said…odd, and a little pathetic…hey, it was 2:37 in the morning and I hadn’t gotten much sleep!

Anyway…Jaiden got better the next day, but the nagging question of how faith works was stuck in the back of my mind.

James chapter 5 says that Elijah was a man with a nature like ours and he prayed that it would not rain and it did not rain for 3 and half years. How many times did Jesus say to the Disciples, ‘Oh ye of little faith.’? Yet in the book of Acts we see people healed, people raised from the dead and demons cast out at the command of the Disciples. All through Scripture we see ordinary people doing extraordinary things simply because they believed God.

I believe God…why can’t I do these extraordinary things? What’s the problem with my faith?

Out of the lunacy of late night wishful thinking I think I’ve found some legitimate answers. James chapter 4 offers some good thoughts here.

James 4:2, “…you do not have because you do not ask…”

How often have I wanted something or needed something and spent my time trying to figure out how I can get it on my own without even thinking to ask my Heavenly Father? Bills, health, relationships…If the Bible is clear on anything it’s this, that God wants to have an intimate relationship with you and out of that intimacy provide for you everything you need that pertains to life and godliness. (II Peter 1:3)

James 4:3, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”

How many prayers have I wasted on ceiling fans? I was talking about this with Londa and after looking at me like I was freak she asked what mountain I was trying to move. Good question. What mountain am I trying to move?

As I look at Scripture, the characters therein and the amazing things they accomplished I’m struck by one poignant, singular truth. These were not unusual men and women. They were people just like you and me. They were ordinary people doing ordinary things obeying an extraordinary God. Out of this relationship mountains were moved. People were healed. Lives were changed.

This week as you live your ordinary life and do your ordinary things recognize your extraordinary God – turn your thoughts and attention toward Him and see if you don’t some day look back to discover that because of your faith through you God moved mountains.

Love y’all,

Chad

Sunday AM Schedule Change

Last week I proposed a schedule change to our Sunday AM worship preparations. I proposed that we begin 15 minutes earlier in order to finish rehearsal by 8:30 – we would then meet in Fellowship Hall for a bite of breakfast and a time of consecration. The response to this suggestion was OVERWHELMING! Beginning AUGUST 20th all of CAM will have new Sunday AM call times (adjusted by 15 minutes). I’ll post the new call times here as we get closer to August 20th. God is doing great things in our church and in CAM – this next semester is going to be the best yet!

Go Deeper - For Good

There is a Broadway Musical called “Wicked” – it’s the story of the life and times of the witches of Oz before that fateful day when Dorothy’s house inadvertently smashed one flat in Munchkinland…you’ve heard me talk about this musical before. I have yet to see it, but I own the soundtrack. There is one song in particular that captures my attention and is cause for pause. Perhaps I’ll play it for you tonight. The name of the song is, “For Good”.

Elphaba – we know her better as the one who becomes the ‘Wicked’ Witch of the West sings this song as a duet with Glinda, the one we know as the Good Witch of the North. Evidently before Dorothy arrived on the scene there is quite a bit of back-story connecting these two and the song reflects this relationship…here are some lyrics…

Elphaba (the wicked one)

It well may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime.

So let me say before we part so much of me is made of what I learned from you.

You’ll be with me like a handprint on my heart.

And now whatever way our stories end I know you have re-written mine by being my friend:

Like a ship blown from its mooring by a wind off the sea.

Like a seed dropped by a sky bird in a distant wood.

Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?

But because I knew you…I have been changed for good.

Glinda – (the ‘good’ one) sings something very similar. It’s a sweet song sung by characters who ultimately end up diametrically opposed to one another. Yet for a moment there is a glimpse of recognition, an understanding really, that there are people who shape our lives. We may disagree with them. We may love them. They may drive us crazy with ‘hair brained’ ideas or drive us to fulfill more of our potential than we ever imagined possible. As the song says, “Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better? But because I knew you…I have been changed for good.”

I have a list. They are people I think about often. Some are friends (Brian Waddell), some childhood bullies (Joe Woods); some are teachers (Mrs. Hoggard), bosses (Bobby Boyles), family (Chris Balthrop), companions (David Anderson), or comrades (James Lankford). Some hurt me deeply; others pushed me (or carried me) further than I thought I could go. For me this song applies to these people.

I wonder if I am that to someone else? I wonder if the words I say and the things I do will change someone…for good. Every moment of our days, every time we come together here at church to learn, to serve, to lead; every word we say carries with it the hidden power to influence both the here and now and the ever after of those people God brings across path.

Genesis 50:15 – 20, “When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?” So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions before he died: ‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’ Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph wept. His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said. But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…”

Measure your actions well. Consider your words carefully, because today you will change someone…for good.

Love y’all,

Chad

Go Deeper - Frantic, A.K.A 'Turning the Corner'

I’ve been thinking…I know, it’s a bit unusual and I avoid it as often as possible because, frankly, it hurts a lot. Regardless, I’ve been thinking. “About what have you been thinking?” the astute observer would ask, and you being very astute observers most certainly are wondering. And so tell you I shall. (Obviously all this thinking has confused my language to the point that I’m beginning to sound like Yoda)

Our role on Sunday’s is to lead worship. We do this through music, technology and the other creative arts. I’m proud of our team. We are artists who inspire others to worship. We encourage the members of our congregation to engage themselves in the topic of the day. We express our love for God in a way that draws lost people into His presence and challenges Believers to surrender to Him more. And while the task is glorious, the effect magnificent and the spirit of our service sweet there are still those times at the end of the day when I pause to consider, “Did we really turn the corner? Did we worship with our whole heart or were we so distracted by the mechanics of the moment that we lost the wonder of the one we worship?”

What a terrible tragedy it would be for the music to be majestic, the video to be awe-inspiring, the drama to be insightful, the technology to be flawless, the preaching to be powerful, and in the complexity of the production miss the simple point that our God is drawing us into a deeper relationship with Him.

We run hard on Sunday’s, and rightly so. It’s a race worth running. Many Sunday’s we run right up to the start of the service. This happens mostly because I’ve tried to arrange our schedule so that everyone can have the maximum amount of time to make it to church. You may or may not see this. You may or may not feel this, but some Sunday’s we push the envelope on our preparations, running sound checks for solos, or Instrumental Ensemble warm up, so close to the service start time that people sitting in the congregation can’t really tell if we’re still practicing or starting the service. Even worse, we don’t get a breath…no time to refocus our thoughts beyond the moment and onto the eternal.

I’ve wondered what our run would look like if we changed our Sunday AM schedule, not drastically, but by 15 minutes.

·      What if we were finished with our warm ups, sound checks and Sunday AM rehearsal @ 8:30am every Sunday morning?

·      What if the doors to the Worship Center were locked during our Sunday AM rehearsal so that no one coming to Worship would see ‘how we make the sausage’? The doors would open at 8:30, pre-service CD playing, announcements rolling. This time coincides with the end of our rehearsal. If we open the doors @ 8:30 we’re not really excluding people – most folks arrive between 8:45 & 9:15. Only those involved in the service are there significantly earlier.

·      What if, from 8:30 – 8:55am, we were off the platform, away from the worship center, and in a place everyone involved in CAM could get a ‘continental’ style breakfast – you know something to munch on and something to drink?

·      What if the choir could use that time from 8:30 to 8:55 in that same room off the platform to hammer out any last minute uncertainties with their director and a piano?

·      What if the Tech Team could use that time from 8:30 – 8:55 to meet briefly to discuss any last minute changes, or questions they may have in order to make the service run smoothly?

·      What if every team within CAM could use that time from 8:30 – 8:55 to ‘turn the corner’, to pray individually within our groups and to get our hearts and minds focused on the eternity behind the task at hand?

·      What if we could do all of this and only have to change our Sunday morning call times by 15 minutes?

You all know me and the desire of my heart – I want us to lead well. I want to us lead from a pure heart, focused on the one true God. I want us to have the time we need for preparation both inward and outward. I want us to know the joy of fellowship that comes from serving together and I want us to experience this every time we get together.

15 minutes…that’s all. Begin praying about how 15 minutes could change the week (or eternity) for you…

Love y’all,

Chad

Go Deeper - FREEDOM

Go Deeper – Freedom

Happy Independence Day – I hope you all celebrated with friends, family and high explosives!

We’ve spoken the last several weeks about how our political freedom has it’s foundation in our spiritual freedom. We’ve been reminded that true freedom is independence from sin and dependence on God. We sang the song, ‘How Great the Father’s Love for Us’ whose words illuminate the truth behind the price that was paid for our freedom. I wonder, as we bask in freedom’s holy light, if we recognize that freedom itself is not the goal. Freedom is like money. We all work for it, we all need it, but money alone will not buy happiness. While the color of money is green eating it will provide no significant form of sustenance. While we could string rows and columns of dollar bills together living in a house literally made of money wouldn’t be comfortable very long.

The work we do to earn a paycheck is not so much about the money we receive, but the things that money can buy. Money is the means, it is not the end. Every dollar represents food on the table, clothes on our back, roof over our head, and fun to be had.

Freedom is like that. We work and sacrifice for freedom’s sake, but freedom is the means, it is not the end. So what will you do with your freedom? Are you trying to live up to the American Dream of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Are you simply trying to get by or get ahead? There’s so much more to our freedom than we really understand.

In Galatians 5 God gives us a list. It’s unique because God himself says that against the things in this list there are no laws! It’s the ultimate freedom, to have no rules and no boundaries, to live your life where everything is just right. You’re familiar with this list. We call it the Fruit of the Spirit. Below I’ve listed the fruit and with it some prayers I pray regularly about how I invest my freedom. How will you invest yours?

For the next several hours I will be exposed to the day's demands. It is now that I must make a choice. Because of Calvary, I am free to choose. And so I choose:

I choose love…

No occasion justifies hatred; No injustice warrants bitterness.

I will remember that love covers a multitude of sins. Today I will love God and what God loves.

I choose love.

I choose joy…

I will invite my God to be the God of circumstance.

I will refuse the temptation to be cynical, the tool of the lazy thinker.

I will refuse to see people as anything less than human beings, created by God.

I will refuse to see any problems anything less than an opportunity to see God.

I choose joy.

I choose peace…

As much as is up to me I will live peaceably with all men.

I will live forgiven. And I will forgive so that I may live.

I choose peace.

I choose patience…

I will overlook the inconveniences of the world.

Instead of cursing the one who takes my place, I'll invite him to do so.

Rather than complain that the wait is too long, I will thank God for a moment to pray.

Instead of clenching my fist at new assignments, I will face them with joy and courage.

I choose patience.

I choose kindness…

I will be kind to the poor, for they are alone.

Kind to the rich, for they are afraid.

And kind to the unkind, for such is how God has treated me.

I choose kindness.

I choose goodness…

I will go without before I take dishonest gain.

I will be overlooked before I will boast.

I will confess before I will accuse.

I choose goodness.

I choose faithfulness…

Today I will keep my promises.

My debtors will not regret their trust.

My associates will not question my word.

My spouse will not question my love.

And my children will never fear that I will not come home.

I choose faithfulness.

I choose gentleness…

I choose to be gentle. I will remember that a soft answer turns away wrath.

If I raise my voice may it be only in praise.

If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer.

If I make a demand, may it be of myself.

I choose gentleness.

I choose self-control…

I am a spiritual being.

After this body is dead, my spirit will soar.

I refuse to let what will rot, rule that that will not.

I will make my decisions based on eternity rather than the moment.

I choose self-control.

So today, how will you invest your freedom? Live by rules, die by the rules or live by the Spirit and discover what true freedom is all about.

Love y’all,

Chad
